May is Mental Health month and as it comes to an end, we have tragically had a front row seat to two different mass shootings. One involving a white man who goes inside of a grocery store and shoots ten people, and he is feed water and taken good care of, yet we have another man African American is simply running down a street and he is shot in the back for no reason. He is dead but no one seems to care. The question that remains is does America care about black and brown lives? Do we as minorities have the same rights to safety and protection like those of white Americans?

It's hard to tell.

On May 24, 2022, a lone gunman walks into an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas and opens fire on teachers and 2nd-4th grade students. Nineteen Hispanic students and two teachers were killed as parents waited outside for close to an hour, waiting for police to breach the school to stop the massacre. When no action was being taken quick enough, parents of students rushed to save their children, but were met with hostility and aggressiveness by law enforcement officials.

Again, the question remains, are black and brown lives important to America? Is this another form of domestic terrorism, or is this simply a cry for help? Was this young man struggling with mental health issues? Could have he shown signs he needed help or was this simply an act of hate?

We will never really know.

What we do know is that mental health struggles are often silent before they ever become noticeable. If you know of someone who may need mental health services don't fail to tell someone who can help this person. I know we may not know everyone who is suffering from mental illness but as we all can see it's starting to ramp up again where folks are killing our loved ones. Don't stay silent if you see someone acting unusual don't hesitate to tell someone in authority you just may help save more lives.
